Synopsis
Padrão dos Descobrimentos was first erected in 1940, in a temporary form, as part of the Portuguese World Exhibition. It was created by Cottinelli Telmo (1897–1948) and the sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida (1898–1975).
The monument was reconstructed in 1960 to mark 500 years since the death of the Infante Dom Henrique (Henry the Navigator).
Shaped as a caravel of stone, the monument has two lateral ramps where we find 33 representative statues of significant characters of the Portuguese overseas expansion, led by Infante Dom Henrique.
In the same year, the Republic of South Africa bestowed a Compass Rose with 50m diameter and made of different types of marble, containing a 14m-wide planisphere to decorate the entrance floor. Ships and caravels mark the main routes of the Portuguese expansion. The Compass Rose was designed by the architect Luís Cristino da Silva.
After the significant renovation work in the 1980s, the interior of the monument was equipped with several facilities, such as an auditorium and two exhibition rooms which allow for an intense cultural activity.
An elevator was also added to take its visitors to the viewpoint terrace, at 50m high, from where you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the city of Lisbon towards the Tagus River estuary, Belém Tower, Império Square and Hieronymus Monastery.
As a long-standing ex-libris of the city of Lisbon, Padrão dos Descobrimentos is annually visited by hundreds of thousands of Portuguese people and foreigners alike, who have chosen the monumental area of Belém as a leisure and walking destination.
